Entry Description

With a floor area of 1.4 million sqm and an initial capacity of 90 million passengers per year, it is the largest single terminal under one roof in the world and a heroic feat of design, engineering and construction. On completion of future phases, the airport will serve 200 million passengers annually.
Illuminating a project of this size was a real challenge. Providing both daylight and artificial lighting design, Hoare Lea collaborated closely with concept and detailed architects, and local teams on site to complete a full design package in just 20 months.
Hoare Lea took inspiration from the architectural form of the ceiling which echoed similar forms from Istanbul’s many breath-taking mosques. The way natural and artificial light worked with the interior and materials to create form, space and brilliance was broken down into themes – uplight to vaults, halo forms and human scale light. These were used at motifs for the lighting design and celebrated with light.
