Entry Description

Jason Bruges Studio were approached by architects Barr Gazetas to take part in a competition to design a new pendant lighting system in the Grade II listed retail space Quadrant Arcade, on Regent Street. The brief was to create a visible and inviting street presence at both Regent Street & Glasshouse Street to draw people into the arcade and to compliment the stunning architecture that has been rigorously restored.
Light Quadrant sits in the central corridor ceiling between the existing and refurbished coving details, and consists of 11 elegant, sculpted light pendants. Using linear lights, each pendant forms a parabolic curve revealing itself as you walk along the arcade.
Our interest in exploring the idea of quadrants stems from John Nash and his masterplan of Portland Place to Charing Cross, where he holds a high regard for the procession of lineage to curvature as an enabler for architectural events. The architecture of the arcade also demonstrates a similar regard for such lineage and curvature.
We have taken inspiration from these geometries to create a mathematically generated quadrant in three dimensions using linear lights to achieve an overall curve.
