Entry Description

After nearly 45 years of use, the Langara College Science and Technology Building lacked many advanced technologies for education that had become available since its construction. As a result, the College sought the ambitious goals of developing a new, state-of-the-art, energy neutral facility that would increase student capacity and give their programs and students an added edge moving into the future, while achieving LEED Gold standards for construction and operations. AES designed energy saving measures that reduced the need for internal lighting within the labs while maintaining recommended illumination levels. This enhanced lighting control system superseded the minimum requirements of ASHRAE 90.1-2010 and resulted in a lighting system with 25% less energy consumption compared to the 2010 baseline. AES’ design utilized occupancy sensors to turn off luminaires and daylight sensors within spaces with adequate natural light.
